Hi JMV,
I'll risk jumping into this can of worms. The big three on Unix are Oracle, Sybase, and Informix. If you are a blue shop, DB2/6000 might be of interest to you, though I haven't heard much about it lately. Some issues:

Price/Performance
Talent pool you'll have to hire from
Packages you might want to implement
Stability/Attitude of Vendor
"Openess"
Interoperability
Features

I think all of the "big three" will run on AIX and will work with many, if not most, of the front-end application tools. I think all three vendors will be around for a while.
