I tried to set up the Personal Oracle CD on my PC at home and hit a big problem.
The machine is a 486DX50, 20MB ram, 840 MB Hard disk running Windows 3.11

I ran the Installation, and it seemed to complete successfully, though it didn't give the messages mentioned in the documentation.

The problem is that when I try to startup the database, using the database manager icon ( traffic lights ), it freezes the PC in a big way, ie. even the Caps lock key stops working, the mouse doesn't move and I have to hit the reset button.

Instead of starting it this way, I tried to use SQL*DBA. I connect internal, startup nomount ( successfully ), then tried to alter database mount, this stage freezes the machine again.

I have followed the pre-installation tasks, like installing win32s, removing the write part of smartdrv ( though windows 3.11 ) doesn't really use smartdrv, it has internal caching ( could this be the problem? ). I don't have the microsoft sound system installed etc.

I have spent hours messing with this and have tried starting from scratch a number of times and I feel like I'm not that far away from it now, if someone can possibly help or advise me on what could be wrong, I'd really appreciate it. Please post or email.

Thanks.
