My problem turned out to be due to the fact that the Oracle Solaris x86 install process requires a little more than 70 MB of virtual memory. If this fact is documented anywhere, I missed it.
I ended up creating a temporary swap file on another workstation, and everything went very smoothly. I don't quite understand the point of the X installation front end - it doesn't add any value, but it certainly does add to the virtual memory requirements!
