If you find that you are needing to perform this type of alter time and time again, it might be wise to investigate a 3rd party tool that can ease the burden of creating another table. A tool such as PLATINUM's Desktop DBA can enable you to just point and click to remove a column instead of creating a new table without the column, selecting into that table, then dropping the old table. All of that work is done automagically, behind the scenes by the tool.
