Docs and benchmarks on dbms packages?

I have only just started working with a Oracle rdbms (7.1.6). Today (to my own surprise), I managed to create and execute a Pro*C program (big deal), where I use the dbms_alert package to detect specific updates on a table. Attached to the table is a db-trigger which signals an alert after an update. I'm also going to take a look at the dbms_pipe package.

The problem is that the only documentation I have found are the dbms*.sql files and a few pages in the 'Server Appl. Dev's Guide' (which are nearly identical).

My questions:
- Is there more docs on these subjects, if so where can I find it?

• I have my doubts about the performance of these packages (just a gut feeling), specifically the alert-one.Does it exist any related benchmark figures on these packages or is there anybody out there,who would like to share his or hers experience with me?
