It may not work. Export/import is valid for databases that follows oracle rules, if you don't do that your export/import will not work. But in such cases, backup will work if you shutdown the database, make UNIX backup and open the database, in case of error, restore that UNIX backup.
I didn't follow the previous mails, so, I don't assume you to do that. Oracle imports are usually (!) safe.
