Triple mirroring is actually an overkill. Hot backups are not tedious. The
database needs to be running in archivelog mode. Since you have the luxury
of shutting down the instance ( not a 7*24 shop ), you can explore other
options like copying the database files onto a disk array and then backing
up the array.
You can automate the hot backups using UNIX scripts. Look at the book "Oracle backup and Recovery handbook" by Rama Velpuri. This is definitely a good starting point for exploring options.
