Oracle Power Objects: What can it do?

I am looking into Oracle Power Objects for a small inhouse app. that needs to run on both MacOS and Windows. For the $400+- (each) version of OPO you get the Blaze database engine. Am I correct in assuming that I can create this Blaze database on a shared drive and let both Mac and Windows access this database concurrently? Also would I be able to access this Blaze database from other programs using ODBC? For example would I be able to use MS Word ability to pull data via ODBC to perform a mail merge?
