Symetric replication

I am trying to set up a simple distributed database using symetric
replication. ( Oracle 7.2.2 on Sun Solaris 2.4). I followed the
instructions
in the book step by step, creating the schemas on both systems
along with the repadmin and surrogate users and their links.
When I execute the DBMS_REPCAT.ADD_MASTER_DATABASE
PLSQL procedure, I get:
ORA-03113: end of file on communication channel.
I gather that this means that the server process which was assigned to me has gone south. All I get out of Oracle tech support is "Symetric replication is a very complex product. You should either take the course or hire one of our consultants."
Has anyone actually gotten Symetric Replication to work? If so, are there some rules of thumb for Oracle initialization parameters (SGA size...) and Solaris kernel configuration parameters?
Is there, perhaps, a patch which fixes the problem which I am encountering?
Thanks in advance,
