the only thing to remember is that if the gunzip does not work correctly and the file is corrupted (the backup that you need due to an emergency), oracle *can not/will not/why should they* be responsible for your data. and now try to get someone to take responsibility for the problem with a free, public domain utility (gzip). i dont want to be the one explaining that to upper management (to save time and money on tapes, etc. i used this tool i got of the net..)
