I've used the Oracle_Base install previously on Oracle 7.0.16 and found it extremely useful (after the initial effort to understand the logic of the different file placement locations). I too was surprised to see no mention of it in the installation/upgrade doc for 7.2.2 when I was preparing my recent upgrade. I had prepared for and planned out just slipping the new 7.2.2 products install right in along side my current running 7.0.16 (as Oracle_Base specified was its primary advantage). I went ahead as if it would still work and it did. I was able to install the upgrade right along side my current version, shut down the database, edit a few files to note the new Oracle Home path switch, and bring up my database under 7.2.2 with no problems. I run both SQL*Net V1 and V2 with both TCP/IP and Async/IPC support. I was back in production the next day with the new version. Oracle_Base configuration made it a piece of cake, no datafiles to move, etc. I'm surprised Oracle has dropped documentation/recommendations for DBAs to use it. Hopefully its just a 7.2.2 omission that will be rectified shortly. Received on Mon Nov 06 1995 - 00:00:00 CET
