I was at Philadelphia and saw the demo of Oracle 8. It looked pretty "real" to me. As for the "joke" mentioned, I believe it's slightly off the mark. Oracle v8 was supposed to have two fundamental characteristics: vastly improved replication characteristics as compared with the original snapshot capability in Oracle 7 and "object extensions." When it became clear that object technology was going to delay the release, Oracle decided to ship the completed replication features and called the product 7.2 instead of 8. Oracle 7.3, which will reportedly have various "data warehousing" capabilities as well as some other attractive enhancements was not part of the original Oracle 8 plan as far as I understand--that's why they bought some of this technology.
