can I learn oracle without large database on my pc?

I want to install oracle on my linux box. But some people told me I could not learn oracle without large database. They said the sql language is easy, but theto acccess a database is really a big problem. That is why oracle is so hard to learn. Without large database, you cannot have enough experence. Then how can I get access to such databases?
