I find that my background as a UNIX systems admin helps me a lot in managing the installation better ( helps me better understand the various implementation aspects of the OFA, integrating the UNIX and Oracle backups etc ). Learning the Oracle architecture is also very important. This can be learnt from books.
But unfortunately, books teach you how to do the DBA functions, but not how to respond in problem/crisis situations.
