  I think you are wrong on the part of pushing your way in or falling into it. Oracle has classes that cover the programming end and the DBA end of things. I worked in a small department at a University, and we were the only Oracle site on campus. When asked if I was a programmer or a DBA, I would answer that I am THE Oracle person for my department. I took classes in forms programming and DBA responsibilites. I had to take care of all the Oracle. Not all places are like that, but I feel that a true Oracle person, should know all aspects of Oracle. In my present site I was hired as an Oracle DBA, but I do more programming than DBA. I sure would have been lost if I didn't know programming too!
