Patrick,
This suggestion will not help you out of your current situation but, I'm making an assumption that you're not going back to version 7.1.4 because you do not have enough disk space to keep both copies on your machine.
If you intend on supporting a production environment using Oracle, you may want to consider having adequate disk resources available to account for the problem you are experiencing at this time.
With respect to the problem you are having, I believe I may be of help as the problem sounds very familiar. As I recall, I performed the linking manually which yes, does suck, but nonetheless worked. I will provide the notes I have kept, but my strongest recommendation is to perform the software installation ONE MORE TIME, if at that time you are still encountering problems, then you may feel you have no other recourse but to follow the cryptic notes below.
Lastly, and this is the part I must do...I must remind you that I cannot be held accountable for any actions you take. It is my recommendation that before administrating any suggestions, coming from any sources, that you should first contact Oracle to ensure that all steps being followed adhere to Oracle Technical Support policies and procedures. If you haven't guessed, this is my disclaimer and I hope you understand why I must include it. Feel free to send Email if anything I have said is unclear.
copy 'genshlib_' from CD/tape to $ORACLE_HOME/lib decompress using 'iouncomp' from the CD /oracle/orainst run by typing: genshlib filename /* this will return a library name suffix and
version number */
then type: genshlib library-suffix version-number
You may find yourself performing this step for several files and you have no choice but, to nail each one.
Good Luck
