Thanks for your reply. I'm specifically interested in why 2 times as many writes as reads were taking place in the tablespace. There was definitely no other activity in the tablespace. This behavior is repeatable.
The tablespace is striped via hardware, and the SGA is large enough to hold most or all of the table. The average row size is 40 bytes. It seems silly not to maintain an accurate row count that can be easily and quickly retrieved.
