oracle7 & sqlnet v1 problems

ERROR: ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel

the above problem is occuring after i installed sqlnet v1 from the 7.1.6 distribution. i ran the "tcpctl start" program on the server and everything seems to have started OK. but i can log in using the sqlnet v1 syntax ("T:host:SID").

i need to do this because an application i am running does not work with v2, and support is not expected soon enough.

anyone know what i am doing wrong that is causing v1 to not work (v2 is working OK)?
