imbedded SQL hangs on server failure

Our application, using imbedded Pro*C [v1.6], hangs when it encounters SQL statements after a [database] server failure. This is over a SQL*Net V2 connection, between SPARC 20s running Solaris 1.1.1b (aka SunOs 4.1.3_u1) and the 7.1.4.1.1 kernel.

Is there any way that the imbedded SQL statements may be configured to timeout, or otherwise fail, if the server does not respond in a timely fashion? Or current sqlnet.ora file does not contain any parameters of this nature, nor did I see them elsewhere.

In the event of a database server failure, we have a redundant server to which we can switch, if we can first free our client from hanging on the failed server. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
