Winsock 1.1 works fine. You have to specify the correct vendor when installing sql*net on the client, though. Who is the vendor? Are they truly winsock 1.1 compliant? We use Wollongong Pathway 3.0 here, which gives us no problem. Does your vendor have a name resolver? The fact that ping doesn't work tells me that maybe the name resolver isn't hooked up right.

You can stick the ip address in tnsnames.ora instead of the host name. This might help you to debug.
