You do not say what platform you are on, but for example you would get this message on an HP box in a background trace file every time you start the instance. It is infact an internal message reporting the fact that there is no asyncronous device support - suprise suprise - it is of no consequence and when I originally reported it to Oracle support they said they were going to remove the message from the trace file completely. However, we are still using some 7.0.16 instances here and this has still not been fixed ! It is fixed in 7.1.4 on HP/UX 9.04 and 10.0
