In Oracle R10.x, you can do Oracle alerts w/o using Oracle*Mail/Office if you are doing only one-way alerts. If you want to do two-way alerts, you will need to set up a tiny Oracle*Mail db and configure it so that it will forward all may to the MSMAIL server through unix sendmail, which is what they mean by installing Oracle*Mail with an UNIX Mail gateway. It may be possible that Oracle*Office now has a MS-Mail gateway, in which case you can bypass the UNIX sendmail gateway installation.
If you are only doing one-way alerts, you can configure in the Oracle*Alert screens to use UNIX sendmail.
