I've done DBA work at two different companies (last one Oracle, this one Ingres), and I think that Doris Jetz's list of DBA duties is the best I've ever seen, and it is applicable to any relational database setup. Of course, as Doris says, these duties might be split among several people, depending on how your company is organized. For instance, at my last job the computer system administrator insisted on doing all software installations himself, including Oracle. Also, it's probably more common for a training co-ordinatior to make arrangements for training, not the DBA.

The amount of manpower you will need depends on the size and complexity of the database. My last job was a simple centralized VAX Oracle database with about 40 users, and the DBA duties required maybe 1 hour per day, on average. I'm presently the backup DBA at a more complex VAX Ingres site, and the regular DBA's job takes up his whole day. (Don't forget to have a backup DBA!) Received on Wed Jun 14 1995 - 00:00:00 CEST
