This is called 'archivelog' mode and covered extensively in the
Oracle DBA Handbook from Oracle Press. It includes a lengthy script
showing the procedures to alter the tables and logs prior to the archive
and restoration of same after. It appears to be a cumbersome method
and I have found it rarely used in practice. There are also some caveats
about block sizes in the instance corresponding to the Unix filesystem.
