: I have the opportunity to become an Oracle7 DBA in another department in my company. I have about 5 years UNIX shell programming experience in my current position. I know almost nothing about RDBMS or Oracle, but they are willing to train me from the
"ground up". I am finishing up work on my bachelors in Computer Science at a local university.

: I think that this would be a good career move for me. I have a couple of questions:

: a) What level of experience would be considered marketable once I learn the Oracle DBA trade? (i.e., Would I be laughed at if I went job hunting with 2 years of exp. or would I need to have a few more years of seasoning?)

Any level of experience is marketable. You can get a feel for that by your companies willingness to train you from scratch vs. hire someone outside...

: b) What kind of salary could I demand once I get a "marketable" level of knowledge and experience? I live in the northeast Florida area if this makes a difference.

Too many variables here... How good will you get? How demanding will the position be? How lucrative is the project/Company? How aggressive will you be in salary demands?

: Any advice would be appreciated. Please respond via post back to this newsgroup.
