You normally make out ok if you choose a tier one port. All are quality companies that can get you reasonable performance and price/performance.
Choosing one depends on your personal preference. Many of the big names won't sell to you direct anymore, they'll push you to a reseller unless you're a big company purchasing lots of their equipment.
Tier One:
Sun
HP
IBM
DEC - unix,vms, not NT
AT&T GIS (NCR)
Sequent
Pyramid
I believe SGI will also soon be tier one.
