I can't understand why you can't get it to work unless you don't have the correct device name. I have done it with the exact configuration you are describing (except I was using 6.0.36 not 6.0.37). You don't specify the dump file name...just the device (file=/dev/rmt8.0) and then on import you also just specify the device name. Be sure the device is mounted and tape is loaded when you start though.
