Win9X and Oracle - no joy

Our application runs on Windows 3.1 and uses Oracle running on a server. In this case we are using Netware for Oracle. We are running 7.1.3.3 and SQL Net 2 (spx). I have no problem connecting from a Windows 3.1 (or DOS) to any of the Oracle servers.

In anticipation of our customers buying Windows 9X, we got the beta to see what problems we will have. I cannot connect to Oracle from the win9X machine. I keep getting an error indicating that IPX is not loaded (ora-06445 I think). The error message explanation says that netx is not loaded. Well we are using vlm's so that is true but irrelevant. Also I find, unlike the other machines, that I have to enter x:ora7dev instead of ora7dev for the connect string. If I enter ora7dev it complains that the tnsnames.ora file cannot be found. It is in the correct place.

I have tried sqlPlus and the nettest utility. I get the same results for each. Has anyone tried this and gotten it to work? I would be most interested in what you did.

As an aside I found that quite a few install programs will not work with win9X. They rely on paths and the paths do not look like dos paths; they look like NT paths or WFW paths on shared disks ( //jimk-cdrive/share/asub/afile.dat ).
