Look at the "oracle" executable in the $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory. It should be owned by oracle with a group of dba. The file mode should be set to "set-userid-on-execution". This is usually all set up by the "root.sh" shell-script in the orainst directory. Did you run this after the oracle installation? If you didn't, shut the database down, log in as root and run the root.sh shell-script.
