I also did fresh installed of Oracle 7.1.4 on Sequent platform as well as SUN platform. I have a similiar problem with SQL*Plus, and SQL*Net not working probably within SQL*PLus and from RDBMS kernal.
I solved our problem with remake both SQL*Plus and RDBMS, and that seem to solve our problem. Did you maually try to remake Oracle executables with make -f oracle.mk install command?
