Many of my customers are very large (19 Million row + tables or more) and have considered on-line backups. I recommend the following: 1. Do not allow on-line backups to take the place of regularly scheduled off-line backups. In cases of 7x24 operations, online backups can take a long time if the database is huge--do the math on it, it can be worse than off-line!!
2. Since data protection and integrity is the goal here, consider other options to securing your data. Choices include disk mirroring, RAID devices, etc.
3. Data protection is a trade off when operations require high availability. Educate your user community as to what these trade-offs mean to them. Users can become quite cooperative when they understand that you are only trying to protect their data! In essence, Oracle backup strategy has to involve a variety of techniques and technologies. It is the user who has to balance the trade-off. And make sure to do the math on it, too!!! Received on Fri Mar 17 1995 - 05:16:22 CET
