As far as I know, a Replication server "seats" over the log of an SQL server and tryes to keep another SQL server with an syncronized database.
I havn't used it yetm but I think that this replication don't need to be at database level, it can be done at table level. Here I may be wrong.

It's not only a question of application, it may be a performance problem. Or just a topological problem, imagine 2 sites connected with a WAN, why to add the WAN overhead to every access if you can replicate de info locally just with one (permanent) WAN connection...

It looks a good idea, but I don't really know if it is safe.
