It has been awhile, but...
I have successfully moved Oracle from one box to another using a tape backup of all Oracle software, database files, etc. My situation:

  • The OS was the same on both boxes.
  • I used the same drive designation on the new box as the old box (ie., If the Oracle Software was installed on drive D on the old machine I put it on Drive D on the new machine using the same directory, subdirectory structure as the old box); this rule needs to apply to all database files, etc.

Finally, If there are differences in RAM between the two boxes you may want to adjust the database's SGA for your new environment. Note: I have not done this under AIX so I may be missing something.
