Snapshots-has anyone used these?

Has anyone out there used snapshots with any success? My initial testing indicates that even using a snapshot log will slow down my updates by about a factor of 4 and this is not acceptable. I need a read-only copy of this data to be refreshed nightly but can't afford to copy the whole table each night and the snapshot will kill(or severly disable) any process that updates the master table!

One idea that has been mentioned is to use the oracle archive logs to detect which records have changed and to do a 'fast refresh' with this information much the way that snapshot logs do. Is this idea remotely possible?
