The inability to grant synonyms through roles is a problem for us as well. Public synonyms are a solution at some of our client sites. However, when managing both project and corporate databases, public synonyms create major conflicts. Creating private synonyms is not difficult, but being able to use roles for the same purpose would be very convenient.
My memory fails me on this, but I seem to recall hearing that the inability to carry synonyms through roles is a reported "bug" that might, eventually, maybe, if they have time, get worked on.
