Error ORA-12547 using oraperl

I am using oraperl to (try to) connect to a 6.0.36 database. I get the following error

  Error description: ORA-12547: Message 12547 not found; product=RDBMS; facility=ORA

I am able to connect to <remote V6 oracle> from here using this perl script, and <that host> can talk to me, using SQL*Net and the same user/password that fails here.

I am unable to find the offending error number (2547) in any documentation, except that this range of numbers (2500-2699) is reserved for "CT operating system errors", whatever the fuck that means.

Thanks for any light you may be able to shed on this. Email responses preferred, but I'll take what I can get.
