I recommend an oracle book by McGraw-Hill. I am not sure of the exact name. The book is a bit old it came out aroung the same time as rdbms version 6 but it is still really usefull. It may have been updated since.

The first couple of chapters cover relational theory. It has a clear explanation of how to normalize a db design and the reason's why it is sometimes necessary to denormalize. The book has lots of examples, and it also has a reference
