I do not think that Oracle will back off from Oracle Forms because of the large user base and because CDE2 is really a diffent type of product - though for sure they overlap as solutions for a broad set of applications.
It sounds to me like Project X is a product that you should be looking at. I cannot say much more than the fact the product is aimed at the Windows and Machintosh market and is designed to compete - as you suggested - against VB, PowerBuilder, SQLWindows, etc. I think that Oracle customers will be pleased with the product when the application requirements fits Project X's design point. I will be very interested in feedback from customers when the product does become generally available. Until then, it is difficult to comment. As Dennis has pointed out, CDE2 is available today, but if it is not suitable for your project then I believe a look at Project X is worthwhile.
