We can only guess what the corporate executives of Sybase will do. If you asked for my guess, I would say that they will support Oracle with Powerbuilder. The reason is that most of the installations that I have seen in my travels are Powerbuilder interfacing to Oracle. I do not think that Sybase is arrogant enough to presume that Powerbuilder is soooo much better than anything else out there that they can force major corporations to thorw out their Oracle databases and install Sybase, just for the privilege of having Powerbuilder. I see buying Powerbuilder as an excellent move by Sybase, who always had a decent database but lacked an easy development environment (Oracle went with Forms/Reports, Informix went the 4GL route and Sybase thought you should do it all in C or something). I would love to be in a position that my company could make money when a customer decides to buy my database, decides to buy my development tool (even if Oracle sells the database) or the customer buys both. I do not think Sybase could sustain its very high growth rate if its executives were that blind to the realities of the current business environment. Just one person's opinion.
