You could also run the {bstat,estat}.sql scripts (Oracle 6) or utl{b,e}stat.sql found in ~/rdbms/admin to watch utilisation of the database. If the db_free_needed (or something close) statistic is greater than 0 then an increase of db_writers will do some good.
