As a systems engineer with Oracle that has installed on several different platforms, I will not deny that on some platforms there are installation problems. These arise from the fact that it is difficult to keep installation programs that are consistent across all platforms. The Oracle install group has been aware of the problem for some time, and has asked internal and external customers for opinions about how to improve these procedures. In my latest installations on mostly Unix platforms I have been pleased with the improvements.

As for Ingres, it may be true that they can install a production system in the time it takes to read a tape, the only problem is the rest of the product. For horror stories about loading real data into Ingres and general database performance, read the PC Magazine article of September last year on how Ingres took 50 times longer to load data than Oracle. This months PC Magazine did not even enter Ingres in the contest because they really had no product that was new...
Oracle may not be pretty to install, but once you get past that, IT KICKS ASS!
Oracle: PC Magazine Editors Choice for the second year in a row. Ingres: No Show (dead?)...
