Oracle offers the Procedural Gateway for APPC. This code sits on a dedicated box, currently IBM RS/6000. Your Sun would pass requests for IMS data to the RS/6000 and it would use standard APPC to access the mainframe IMS application and pass the resulting data back to the Sun.
They also just announced a Transparent Gateway to EDA/SQL. This SW would sit on the mainframe itself, and make the IMS data source look and feel like a peer Oracle database. This is not available until 1st quarter next year, tho and would be for moderate volumes of transactions.
