I'm probably in the first half, but IT CAN BE DONE, the ability to run forms not only in GUI mode but also in character mode is on of the key features of Forms. I have seen a lot of applications developped on GUI and run on ASCII terminals. You have to be careful when designing your application though. Adding to many bells and whistles will not always result in a practical char mode application, allthough it will run.
On the practical side: if you run forms 4.0 on HP/UX, you can run the following components (there are more, but these seem to be the most important):
- f40desm - the forms 4.0 designer for Motif
- f40runm - the forms 4.0 runtime for Motif
- f40run - the forms 4.0 runtime for character mode screens
Note that you do not have to regenerate the forms when you move from Motif to char mode.
