It would help greatly if you gave the OS your working with. The SID is the instance Identification. which tells oracle at what instance to point to since conceivably you can have more than one instance.
If you are in VMS you can do a show log ora_sid to show the instance id that you are pointing to. If you can't see this you havent executed the orauser.com for that instance. Sometimes there might be a symbol that will setup the oracle logicals and symbols.
