Magna Software Starts Beta Program for MAGNA X/Tuxedo

The MAGNA X application generator for the Tuxedo System OLTP monitor from Novell will begin full beta testing in July, 1994.

MAGNA X is an application generator that supports the development of client/server transaction processing systems. It combines a graphical design process with a high level 4GL to build systems that can reliably access and update both LAN-based databases and mainframe data.

Using MAGNA X, the client side of the transaction processing application is built in any MS-Windows or UNIX/Motif development tool. This allows developers to leverage their existing investment in such popular client-side development tools as PowerBuilder, Visual Basic, JAM, and SQLWindows.

On the server side of the application, development teams use MAGNA X to graphically specify the business logic of their client/server programs. These programs are then stored in a shared workgroup dictionary on a UNIX server, from which UNIX-based and MVS/CICS applications are then generated.

Generated programs execute across distributed UNIX platforms and mainframes, with the client/server transaction processing monitor managing the messaging process.

As an application generator, MAGNA X produces program code in ANSI standard COBOL. The use of COBOL offers considerable advantages over interpreted systems which cannot provide performance that is adequate for transaction processing.

MAGNA X will be released in the third quarter of 1994. Introductory pricing, which will be available until December 31, 1994, starts at $40,000 for a small workgroup. Attractive pricing allowances will be made to participants in the beta program.

Magna Software has been an international marketer of application development software since 1980. The company is privately held and headquartered in New York City, with affiliate offices in Washington and Paris.
