The real problem in this scenario is likely to be the limits of your disk I/O. It's generally not necessary to spend all your budget putting in a new CPU when your existing VAX is a fine machine. You just need to update it with some modern storage with high I/O. The new RAID I/O acceleration techniques do wonders for a VAX. We have installation VAX application performance is speeded up by more than ten times. I am one of the RAID instructors here, and have accumulated quite a lot of information on this topic, which I will be happy to share with systems administrators in a similar bind. BTW, the same is, of course, true for Oracle installations.
