SQL*Net is a licensed product from Oracle Corp.
There are currently 2 major versions of SQL*Net, v1 & v2. While v1 and v2 can both run on both client and server, v1 on the client must talk with v1 on the server and v2 on the client with v2 on the server.
Additionally, v2 only works with Oracle7.
From personal experience, if you are using Oracle7, I would recommend using v2.
