Hi.  

It's okay to install oracle7 under a different username, but you really ought to ensrue that the userid that you want to install Oracle 7 under is in group "dba" and that is the user's default UNIX group. At our site, we have both Oracle 6 and Oracle 7 and Oracle 7.1 on the same machine; ORACLE_HOME is different for each, as is the PATH information.  

There's always some reason to relink when I do installs, either because of different SQL*Net modules to be set up or whatever, so I usually recommend folks relink to be on the safe side.  

Also, did you remember to run the root.sh script that ORAINST generates after you did the install? Some important parts of Oracle won't work right otherwise.
