Not True. We have multiple instances called PROJECT1 , PROJECT2 ...PROJECT5

If Oracle only looked at the first 4 chars then we'd have problems with these, and we don't have problems , so you're statement is inaccurate.

8 characters is the max for Unix AFAIK
