We have run test and development versions of a database as independent instances on both a vax/vms and an sco unix pc. A consultant that we hired from Logica here in Cleveland set up a command script that does things like set the environment symbols etc. to point to one or the other instance. It is also necessary to start both instances manually. We never talked to both at the same time, but one user could use one and another the other etc. I can send you the vax .com files if it would help.
